Lokótá la lokɛ́ (langue minoritaire)

Lokótá la lokɛ́ La langue minoritaire à la maison The minority language at home

Another option is to use the «minority language at home», known as the ML@H technique. This can work when both parents are comfortable in one or both of the couple's mother tongues.

Take, for example, an Congolese mother raising her children in New York with an American husband who also speaks Lingala. In this case, the whole family will use Lingala at home and English outside the family sphere.

This approach avoids some parents feeling that they are alienating other members of the community by preventing them from interacting with their family.

It also provides a clear framework for children - it is at home that the language change takes place.
The difficulty?
A parent who agrees to use a language other than his or her own at home (the Swiss dad in the example above) may feel some frustration at not being able to interact with their children as naturally as they would in their mother tongue.
